Berjaya Buzz App

A Fun-First Corporate Engagement Experience

Overview

Berjaya Buzz is an internal communication and engagement app designed for Berjaya Group employees. The goal was to centralize company news, campaigns, and events in one accessible platform, while improving employee engagement through interactive features such as polls and announcements.

The app was powered by Sweetspot’s CMS, enabling the HR and Corporate Communications team to easily publish, schedule, and manage content without requiring developer support.

Problem

Challenges before the app:

  • Multiple communication channels (emails, WhatsApp, notice boards) — fragmented.
  • Hard to engage employees with corporate announcements & campaigns.
  • No centralized analytics to track engagement or participation.

Objectives / Design Goals
  • Improve employee engagement with gamification (quizzes, polls, etc.).
  • Simplify content management so HR/Comms teams can publish updates independently.

My Role:

As the UI/UX Designer, I was responsible for:

  • Creating the Information Architecture and User Flows for employee and admin experiences.
  • Designing a clean, accessible UI that aligned with Berjaya’s corporate brand.
  • Developing CMS guidelines to streamline content publishing for the HR team.
  • Reviewing and refining the app design based on feedback before launch.

Team Involved:

Product Owner, Developers, Marketing

01.

Information Architecture

To ensure a clear content hierarchy, I mapped out the app’s structure into key sections. Home, Announcements, Events, Campaigns, Promos, and Profile. Making it easy for employees to navigate and find what they need.

02.

User Flow

I created user flows for both employees and administrators to visualize how information would move through the app. This helped align the product team on the end-to-end experience, from content creation in the CMS to user interaction in the app.

03.

CMS Guideline

Because the HR team needed to publish content independently, I developed a clear CMS guideline with step-by-step instructions. This ensured consistency in how news, events, and campaigns were posted, and reduced the reliance on developers.

04.

App UI & Interaction

The Buzz App focused on three main use cases for employees — engagement, announcements, and promotions/campaigns.
Each flow was carefully designed to feel intuitive, visually engaging, and aligned with Berjaya’s corporate identity.

Visual Identity
  • Bright, bold colors (blue & yellow) create a playful and approachable tone.
  • Large headers (e.g., FUN & GAMES, Berjaya Announcement, Did You Know, Have Your Say, New Buzzers) immediately signal the content type and encourage participation.
Content Layout
  • Prominent hero image for each activity keeps screens visually dynamic.
  • Concise descriptive text provides context quickly, respecting employees’ time.
  • Clear call-to-action (yellow “Submit” button) makes next steps obvious and actionable.
Interaction
  • Multiple choice and open-ended fields are supported to allow both quick and thoughtful participation.
  • Instant feedback screen (“Thanks for being fun-tastic!”) rewards participation and builds positive reinforcement.
Gamification
  • Countdown timers (e.g., “28 days left”) create urgency and encourage timely participation.
  • Answer reveal after submission fuels curiosity and encourages repeat visits.

05.

App Review

After launch, we gathered feedback from employees and HR admins to evaluate the app’s usability and impact. This review process helped us refine content strategy and improve engagement over time.

Conclusion

Working on Buzz App taught me the importance of designing for scalability — not just for users but also for the content managers who keep the app alive. It reinforced my ability to balance user experience, business needs, and technical feasibility, while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams.
